The Meaning of Water
Across ancient traditions and alchemical thought, Water has been associated with emotion, intuition, receptivity and the unseen depths within us. It takes the shape of what holds it, moves around what it cannot pass through, and over time can reshape even the hardest surfaces. Its strength does not always lie in resistance, but in its capacity to adapt and endure.
Emotion and memory are deeply intertwined. The feeling attached to an experience can influence the way it is held within us, which may be why a moment from long ago can return with remarkable clarity when stirred by a familiar scent, sound or place. Like something resting beneath the surface, memory can remain quiet for years before unexpectedly rising again.
Water also carries the symbolism of release and renewal. Rivers carry traces of where they have travelled while continuing toward what lies ahead; rain falls and returns; oceans receive countless rivers without becoming any one of them. In this way, Water reminds us that carrying our past does not require us to remain within it. We can honour what has shaped us while continuing to move.
Symbolically, Water invites us into relationship with our emotional depths — not to be governed by them or to turn away from them, but to recognise what they may hold. Emotion, intuition and memory become part of the same inner landscape, each revealing something of where we have been and what continues to shape us.
